U.S. Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, has stated that he will support the GOP nominee in the upcoming presidential election against President Joe Biden, even if it is Donald Trump. Bacon, addressing the Douglas County Republican Party, emphasized his commitment to conservative values, such as border protection, pro-life policies, and support for conservative Supreme Court justices. Although he has faced criticism for his occasional criticisms of Trump, he insists on the importance of truth in politics.
Bacon previously supported Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections and was the first member of Nebraska’s congressional delegation to endorse him in 2020. However, he has acknowledged the challenges of representing a politically competitive district and the pressure from different political groups.
Other members of Nebraska’s congressional delegation have varying stances on the upcoming election. Senator Deb Fischer has endorsed Trump, while Senator Pete Ricketts and Representatives Mike Flood and Adrian Smith have expressed support for the eventual GOP nominee without specific endorsements.
Bacon had shown preference for other candidates, such as Tim Scott and Nikki Haley, but with their withdrawal or poor primary performance, the GOP primary seems increasingly likely to favor Trump.
Bacon’s support for the GOP nominee is seen as expected by some, including himself. However, he anticipates challenges if Trump is the nominee, particularly in his congressional race against Democratic State Senator Tony Vargas. Vargas’s campaign has criticized Bacon’s support for Trump, arguing it contradicts his moderate claims.
Bacon also faces challenges within his party, with two primary challengers, Dan Frei and Michael Connely, seeking the Republican nomination for his congressional seat. Frei is actively seeking Trump’s endorsement, highlighting the impact of Trump’s policies on everyday life.
