Jacob Elordi, an Australian actor, deeply immersed himself into the character of Elvis Presley for Sofia Coppola’s new movie “Priscilla.” This preparation involved adopting Elvis’ famous dietary habits. In a discussion with Sofia Coppola and co-star Cailee Spaeny, highlighted by Entertainment Weekly, Elordi shared that he consumed about a pound of bacon daily. This diet choice was inspired by the fact that Elvis enjoyed particularly burnt bacon, as recounted by Priscilla Presley, Elvis’ ex-wife and the film’s central figure.
Cailee Spaeny, who plays Priscilla in the movie, noted Elvis’ fondness for the “Fool’s Gold” loaf, an extravagant sandwich consisting of a pound of bacon, sourdough bread, and jars of peanut butter and jelly, which Elvis would sometimes have delivered by private jet.
Elvis’ penchant for rich, comfort foods like peanut butter and banana sandwiches is well-documented. According to Coppola, Priscilla Presley mentioned that Elvis’ impoverished childhood, where such sandwiches were a staple, influenced his later eating habits, serving as a reminder of his youth.
The documentary “The Burger and the King: The Life & Cuisine of Elvis Presley” also delves into Elvis’ relationship with food. His former cook, Mary Jenkins Langston, remarked that eating was one of Elvis’ primary joys, favoring richly flavored foods.
Elordi’s commitment to portraying Elvis extended to physically embodying the singer’s size and diet, which he noted made him the biggest he’s ever been, although less noticeable due to his height. This method acting approach provided a deeper understanding and physical connection to the role of Elvis Presley.
